Big Off-Highway Logging trucks from Vancouver I... Sign In or Register to add photos

huge off-highway trucks used to transport old growth timber from the mountains to the coast. These are all Hayes and Pacific Trucks, mainly Hayes HDX and P-16 Pacific?s.... all were built back in the mid to late 1970?s and have been re-built many times, they are still as good or better than new. All have 91,00-134,000 lb planetary axles, big automatics, like Allison 6061?s and big power like C-15 Cats at 600 hp, Signature 600 Cummins, and a few V-12TT Detroits for Engines. They have hyd retarders built into the transmissions, Engine brakes, and water cooled brake drums. They haul on long, steep 20% downgrades and steep uphill grades also.... One trip back into the timber can take up to four hours or more. Loads vary, but 100-130 tons is average...Gross weight of truck and load is about 160-180 tons. Empty they weigh 50 tons or so. I was with these trucks for a week back in early July.... amazing is all I can say when you add weight, size of loads and VERY steep narrow roads...... Here is a link to a YouTube video I made of some of the footage I shot while with the big Hayes HDX in the Mountains from Tim Twichell. USA
